Vernier Compass

The vernier compass has an adjustable scale that allows a land surveyor to take both magnetic and true north readings. It was invented in the 1700s. My engraving was commissioned by Heman Chase (1901-1988) and is based on a sketch of an old brass vernier which he owned. He was a friend and neighbor, a professional land surveyor, and author of local history books. I illustrated his book of surveying stories called More Than Land (1975) in which this print appears. The actual dimension of the engraving is 1.5 inches in diameter.
