At harvest time the Shakers would hand-scythe their fields in teams, as depicted in this imaginary scene of the brethren at the Shaker Village in Canterbury, New Hampshire. Jugs of switchel lie waiting under the tree to refresh the mowers. The hills in the background resemble the view to be seen at the Village today. The engraved woodblock is 5" x 3". |
