This engraving was commissioned by
the Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts. Constructed in
1826, the round stone barn was a unique building for New
England at the time. A massive wooden timber frame inside
supports the roof and cupola, open from floor to ceiling.
Cows were milked in stalls facing the center of the round
barn, and the manure could be easily dumped through holes in
the floor to waiting wagons below. The view is from a window
in the adjacent brick dwelling house. The woodblock is 7 x 5
inches.
