In the summer of 1977, I took a trip to Scotland, England, and Ireland with my fiance, Kathy Torrey. Kathy had been studying the folk culture of the Outer Hebrides and had met this fellow on a previous visit. He was pitching hay into stacks on the machair, the fertile grassland on the west coast of the island of South Uist. Uist is one of the few remaining gaelic-speaking areas of Scotland. I used engraved crosshatching to get the feel of mist in the background. The woodblock measures 5” x 7”.
